About
Oil Paintings
Before the advent of acrylic paints, virtually every art student was trained in oil painting. Therefore, I worked in oils for about fifteen years, and it was during this period of time that my focus gradually shifted to woodcut printmaking. After thirty years of relief printmaking, with occasional periods of working with watercolors, I decided to return to oils. These small oil paintings are the result of re-educating myself in brushwork techniques, textures, and the manipulation of oil paint.
I consider myself an expressionist, but I firmly believe that an artist should be capable of creating a naturalistic image of his subject before attempting to treat in an expressionist or abstract manner. I intend to gradually increase the size of the paintings, and to treat them more subjectively while, as always, I continue working with woodcut prints.
